In <i>Counterfeits<\/i>,<br \/>\nthe heroine inherits a children\u2019s art camp, which I based on a camp near Jemez<br \/>\nSprings, New Mexico, where I\u2019ve attended many writing retreats. Two friends and I were exploring the mountains,<br \/>\nlooking for some suitable gravel to try gold panning (because, why not?). We<br \/>\nfound a likely spot and were about to take a sample when the guys smelled<br \/>\nsomething horrible. A glance in the right direction showed them a dead body<br \/>\nhidden just out of sight of the path.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">The next hour passed in a surreal blur. We&#8217;d left our phones<br \/>\nin another vehicle, at the base of the mountain. Once we retrieved them, we<br \/>\nstill had to find a place with cell reception. We called 911, waited for the<br \/>\npolice, and led them to the body. Later that night we were interviewed by<br \/>\ndetectives. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">By the following day, they had identified the body as a<br \/>\nwoman who had been missing. Her estranged ex-boyfriend was already a suspect in<br \/>\nher disappearance, but without her body they&#8217;d have trouble prosecuting him.<br \/>\nSeeing her picture on TV and learning about her family made the situation real<br \/>\nin a new way. We wanted justice for someone we\u2019d never met. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">It\u2019s All Research<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">As a writer, I knew I was getting rare first-hand experience<br \/>\ninto something powerful. I took pages of notes during that first week, even<br \/>\nthough I didn\u2019t know how or when I might use them. I was fortunate to be with<br \/>\ntwo men who talked openly about their experiences: the nightmares, the guilt<br \/>\nover violence against women, the anxiety that came from now wondering what you<br \/>\nmight see in the bushes. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Three things struck me most strongly. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">First, we all felt deeply invested in the case, even though<br \/>\nwe\u2019d never met the woman in life and didn\u2019t know anyone else involved. We<br \/>\nfollowed the news stories, even though they made us anxious. When the murderer<br \/>\nwas finally sentenced \u2026 well, we weren&#8217;t happy (the sentence of less than 20<br \/>\nyears, in our opinion, nearly long enough), but<br \/>\nwe were relieved that it was over.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Second, it affected every aspect of our lives for weeks.<br \/>\nEven though the likelihood of finding another body, or even witnessing a<br \/>\ndifferent crime, was extremely slim, we were on high alert at all times. It was<br \/>\na struggle to put it behind us while still honoring the memory of the victim<br \/>\nand holding on to what we had learned.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;trebuchet ms&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: large;\">And finally, someone in law enforcement said that often<br \/>\npeople don\u2019t report crime scenes like these. How could someone walk away from<br \/>\nthat? I started thinking about all the reasons someone might want to cover up<br \/>\ntheir discovery, even if they had nothing to do with the crime. Some elements of <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">What We Found<\/i>,<br \/>\nmainly the emotional ones, are taken directly from that experience. And it led to<br \/>\nwhat I consider my most powerful and personal novel to date.
