This week I&#8217;m pleased to present Cathy Perkins and her Holly Price books.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">A<br \/>\nDifferent Point of View<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">By<br \/>\nCathy Perkins<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">When<br \/>\nI was young, if you\u2019d asked me for the last place I\u2019d expect\u2014or<br \/>\nwant\u2014to live, my answer would\u2019ve been, \u201cIn a small town.\u201d<br \/>\nSmall towns seemed to be cultural wastelands, populated by gossiping<br \/>\nneighbors who were all related to each other. And out west? That<br \/>\noption never entered my Southern soul. <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">Fast<br \/>\nforward a few years and dangle the right job opportunity at the right<br \/>\ntime and\u2014you got it in one\u2014we moved to a small town in eastern<br \/>\nWashington state. We quickly discovered most of those myths about<br \/>\nsmall towns were simply\u2026myths.  <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">As<br \/>\nwe settled into our new hometown, I debated whether my novels should<br \/>\nmake a similar cross-country leap. My South Carolina based mysteries<br \/>\nfeatured a law enforcement protagonist. To get appropriate<br \/>\noperational procedures, along with cop attitudes and humor, I drew<br \/>\nfrom a circle of friends at various levels of local, state and<br \/>\nfederal law enforcement. Curious about procedures in our new town, I<br \/>\nparticipated in the Citizen\u2019s Police Academy and discovered most of<br \/>\nthe same policies and philosophies I\u2019d encountered back east. (I<br \/>\nalso learned more than I ever wanted to know about making meth. Nasty<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>nasty<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><br \/>\nstuff.)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">Volunteering<br \/>\nfor the Sexual Assault Center as a hospital victim\u2019s advocate<br \/>\nprovided an intimate view of law enforcement. Other than one cocky,<br \/>\ntestosterone-laden patrol officer and another older guy I wanted to<br \/>\nstrangle (except that would be assault and I really had no interest<br \/>\nin going to jail), I found the officers professional, well educated<br \/>\nand well trained.  Nobody\u2019s perfect, but I appreciated what these<br \/>\nmen and women did on a daily basis. <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">And<br \/>\nthose inevitable slow days in a small town? Well, let\u2019s just say<br \/>\nthe day my in-law\u2019s moving van got stuck at the entrance to the<br \/>\nretirement village (blocking traffic on the main road\u2014another<br \/>\nrelative term), all four patrol cars PLUS the sergeant showed up.<br \/>\nOnce they finished laughing, they helped a retired mechanic (who was<br \/>\nin heaven being the expert, by the way) do something to a suspension<br \/>\npart and un-stuck it. For some strange reason, the chief of police<br \/>\nwas not amused when I relayed this story at a party\u2026 So far, I\u2019ve<br \/>\nrefrained from using this tidbit in a book. <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">With<br \/>\nonly five patrol officers on duty during a shift (and fewer than this<br \/>\nin the even smaller nearby towns) reciprocal agreements were a must.<br \/>\nNeighboring cities, counties, even Washington State Patrol was a<br \/>\nwelcome addition when suspects took to the highways to escape. I made<br \/>\nuse of this mutual support during Holly Price\u2019s carjacking in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>So<br \/>\nAbout the Money<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"> (Book<br \/>\n1 in the series). In addition to the local officers, county deputies<br \/>\nand state patrol officers joined the chase to catch the villains in<br \/>\nthat scene. On a broader scale, I\u2019ve used the involvement of<br \/>\noutside agencies\u2014the DEA, for example, in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>In<br \/>\nIt For The Money<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">\u2014to<br \/>\nwork with\u2014and against\u2014the local law enforcement agencies.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">I\u2019d<br \/>\nbetter back up a second. For this series, along with changing<br \/>\nlocations from South Carolina\u2019s cities to a small town in eastern<br \/>\nWashington, I switched from a multiple (hero, heroine, villain) point<br \/>\nof view approach and a law enforcement main character, to a single,<br \/>\ncivilian character. Whew! Talk about stretching and growing as an<br \/>\nauthor. Everything that happened in the story had to come through<br \/>\nthat one character\u2019s experiences and reactions. (And no cheating<br \/>\nwith, \u201cWell, Laurie, as you know, this thing you should already<br \/>\nknow about happened, but let me give you the complete backstory.\u201d)<br \/>\nAction and body language became as important as dialogue for<br \/>\nrevealing character\u2014but that\u2019s a different discussion.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5379.temp.domains\/~pjmaclay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/So-About-the-Moneywebversion.jpeg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"320\" data-original-width=\"214\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5379.temp.domains\/~pjmaclay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/So-About-the-Moneywebversion.jpeg?resize=212%2C320\" width=\"212\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">Rather<br \/>\nthan having my new protagonist act as a private investigator or a<br \/>\njournalist working the crime beat, I made my heroine an accountant.<br \/>\nCurious, bright and loyal to friends and family (hmm, she\u2019s much<br \/>\nbetter at crime solving than my dog) she made a terrific character to<br \/>\n\u201cfollow the money.\u201d Of course, when you poke at villains, they<br \/>\nhave a tendency to poke back, harder. It was fun to write the scenes<br \/>\nwhere Holly bumped up against law enforcement and filter the scene<br \/>\nthrough her impressions\u2014her point of view\u2014rather than another<br \/>\ncop\u2019s. <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">My<br \/>\nnew law enforcement friends did insist I get the details right. Even<br \/>\nif they produced giant eye-rolls from my heroine. <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>So<br \/>\nAbout the Money<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"> romps<br \/>\nthrough eastern Washington with its rivers, wineries, Native American<br \/>\ncasinos, and assorted farm animals. Add in some wicked fun chemistry<br \/>\nbetween the CPA amateur sleuth and a local detective and Holly Price<br \/>\nbetter solve the case before the next dead body found beside the<br \/>\nriver is hers.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5379.temp.domains\/~pjmaclay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/In-It-For-the-Money-web2.jpeg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"234\" data-original-width=\"156\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5379.temp.domains\/~pjmaclay\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/In-It-For-the-Money-web2.jpeg?resize=212%2C320\" width=\"212\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><i>In<br \/>\nIt For The Money<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><br \/>\ncontinues Holly\u2019s adventures: <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\nHolly Price traded<br \/>\nprofessional goals for personal plans when she agreed to leave her<br \/>\nhigh-flying position with the Seattle Mergers and Acquisition team<br \/>\nand take over the family accounting practice.
