This week we get to highlight our books in the firm of excerpts. I thought it might be fun to get acquainted with Tasha, a minor character in Wolves’ Pawn, who ended up being the hero of her own story in Wolves’ Knight. But first, for those of you who managed to stumble upon my blog and haven’t read Wolves’ Pawn yet, here’s the blurb:<\/p>\n

\nAnd now here’s our introduction to Tasha. She first shows up about a quarter of the way into the book, <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>Outside
\nthe conference room, a number of men and women with guns stood at
\nalert in the hallways. Dot shivered at the sight, and Gavin placed a
\ncomforting hand on the small of her back. One of the women, a tall
\nblonde with two guns strapped across her back, a pistol stuck in the
\nwaistband of her pants, and a nasty looking knife strapped to her
\nthigh, jumped out of the chair she\u2019d been sitting in, and
\napproached them.<\/i><\/div>\n
\n\u201cHey,
\nGavin,\u201d she said with a grin as she pulled one of the guns over her
\nhead and handed it to him. \u201cThe arms master sends his regards\u2014said
\nhe remembered this was your favorite model rifle.\u201d Nodding, he
\nhefted the AK-47 then slung the band on his shoulder. She handed him
\na magazine. \u201cHe said to see him if you want more ammo,\u201d she
\nadded. She turned to Dot and extended her hand. \u201cI\u2019m Tasha. One
\nof your bodyguards for the night. Tanya will be the other one. She\u2019s
\nmy twin sister. You won\u2019t see much of her, she\u2019ll be taking
\noutside duty.<\/i><\/div>\n

\nTasha got written out of the story about halfway through it. Spoiler alert! No, she didn’t die. But I guess she wasn’t real happy with that, because about a year after Wolves’ Pawn was released, she started bugging me. She wanted me to tell her story. I tried putting her off for awhile, but she wasn’t listening. I finally gave in and Wolves’ Knight was the result.<\/p>\n

First, here’s the description of the book:<\/p>\n

Tasha Roeper knows what it means to protect your own. So when her friend, Dot Lapahie, CEO of Lapahie Enterprises, suspects that the Free Wolves are under attack, Tasha immediately signs on to lead the investigation and guard Dot.<\/i>
\n
<\/i>
\nBut Tasha’s not convinced it’s the Free Wolves that are the target. She fears that her own pack\u2014the Fairwood Pack\u2014are the actual quarry and Dot is only a decoy.<\/i>
\n
<\/i>
\nThe deeper Tasha digs, the more puzzles she uncovers.<\/i>
\n
<\/i>
\nTorn between tradition and a changing world, will Tasha risk everything to save a friend\u2014including her own life\u2014when old enemies arise?<\/i><\/p>\n

In this excerpt, Tasha, after being gone for over a year, is meeting with the Fairwood’s pack arms-master, Elder Fenner.

\n<\/p>\n

 \u201cWe weren\u2019t sure you\u2019d
\nwant to come back. The reports we got were that you fit in well with
\nthe pack in Maine. I half-expected you to find your mate.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n

\nTasha knew the pack leader had
\nsent reports back. At first she felt like a kid in school again, but
\nsoon decided that it didn\u2019t matter. It wasn\u2019t like she was a
\nprisoner. She had been free to leave anytime she wanted.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cHave you been talking to my
\nmother? Because she mentioned the same thing.\u201d She grinned. \u201cI
\nbonded deeply with many members of the pack, both male and female,
\nand I can count on them for help if I ever need it. But none of the
\nmales appealed to me as anything but friends. My mother is worried
\nbecause I\u2019m well past the typical mating age for females, and I\u2019ve
\nnever been in a serious relationship.\u201d Although Tanya hadn\u2019t
\nmated yet, she\u2019d had several long-term boyfriends. The older she
\nand her twin got, the more they developed their own personalities.<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cYour mother has mentioned
\nher concerns to several of the elders. That\u2019s why I brought it up.
\nAs much as people push the whole concept of mates, there always have
\nbeen exceptions to the rule. For a while, we thought Elder Fairwood
\nmight be one of them, that he might never choose a mate. That
\nwould\u2019ve been a disaster for the pack.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cAnd then he found Dot.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cYes.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\nTasha smiled. \u201cSo the Elders
\ngossip about the pack members\u2019 love lives.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not gossiping,\u201d
\nElder Fenner said sternly. \u201cWe’re showing our concern for the
\nfuture of the pack.\u201d He grinned. \u201cDon\u2019t tell anyone. It\u2019s a
\nbadly kept secret.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cGot it.\u201d She watched an
\nant crawling up a stem of grass, wondering if she should breech
\nprotocol and ask a personal question. \u201cYou never mated.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cNo.\u201d He closed his eyes.
\n\u201cI came close once, but she was killed in a pack war. Since then,
\nI\u2019ve devoted myself to making the pack as secure as possible so the
\nsame fate doesn\u2019t happen to anyone else.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n
\n
\n\u201cYou\u2019ve done a good job.\u201d
\n<\/span>
\n<\/i><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\nA V of geese flew overhead.
\n\u201cAm I good enough?\u201d she asked quietly.<\/i><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
