\nThe
\nArt of Getting Away<\/i><\/span><\/span>
\nby Nicole Sorrell is a companion short story to her series The Art of
\nLiving. The main character is Carlos, who lives in the small
\nMidwestern town of Clantonville, Missouri, where he grew up. He\u2019s
\nthirty-four years old, and has one younger brother, Zac. <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nThe
\nstory occurs when Carlos takes a vacation at Table Rock Lake. There
\nhe meets a sassy girl he calls Andie.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nLet\u2019s
\nlisten in as Carlos answers a few questions:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cWhat is your superpower?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/a>Carlos:
\n\u201cI\u2019d have to say cars. I can fix almost anything wrong with them.
\nI\u2019ve been hanging around my Uncle Jose\u2019s garage since I was a
\nteenager, and I\u2019ve worked for him full time for over ten years.
\nHe\u2019s the best mechanic there is, and he\u2019s taught me everything he
\nknows. So if it\u2019s broke, I can figure out how to fix it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s your biggest regret?\u201d<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/i><\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cI recently lost my aunt, who was like a mother to me. My biggest
\nregret is that I didn\u2019t appreciate her more when she was here. My
\nmother left when I was four, and I never saw her again until a few
\nweeks ago. Looking back, I realize how involved my Aunt Cecilia was
\nin my life. I wish I\u2019d have told her more often how important she
\nwas to me, not just at the end.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cBut you did get a chance to tell her?\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cYes, I did. She had cancer, so her death wasn\u2019t a complete
\nsurprise. I sat with her one afternoon about a month before she
\npassed, and told her how much she meant to me. We had a chance to
\nremember some of the crazy things I did as a teenager when I was
\ngoing through a rebellious phase. She kept me out of trouble with my
\ndad, who was a deputy sheriff. She was always there when I needed
\nher, with a smile, or a hug, or just to listen. It\u2019s hard being
\nwithout her now, knowing I\u2019ll never see her again. We were really
\nclose.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cClothes in the hamper or on the floor?\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cIt\u2019s about fifty-fifty. I try to keep the place neat, but
\nsometimes it gets away from me. Gets pretty messy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cDo you have a favorite pet?\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cI don\u2019t have a pet. If I did, it would be a dog. A big one, like
\na German shepherd or a Rottweiler. One that would be good for
\nprotection, but well-trained. I hate dogs that have bad manners.\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite food?\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cI like spicy food. My Aunt Marie is a great cook, and she makes
\nthe best Mexican food. I love her chicken enchiladas. She makes them
\nwith her homemade green salsa and sour cream. Delicious.\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cAnd your favorite vacation spot?\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cTable Rock Lake, in the Missouri Ozarks. I recently went there for
\nvacation. I stayed in a little cabin that had a nice private beach.
\nIt was beautiful, peaceful. Real special. Even more so because of the
\npeople. You just never know who you might meet there.\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nQ:
\n\u201cWhere do you see yourself in five years?\u201d <\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\nCarlos:
\n\u201cFunny you should ask me that. A year ago I would have said the
\nsame place I am now. I like small town life, and I like being single.
\nI never wanted the responsibility of a wife and family, or even a
\npet. But lately I\u2019m not so sure about the single part. I may
\nreconsider that. Having children might not be so bad. You never know
\nwhat the future holds.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nAbout

\n<\/a>I
\ncurrently reside in a rural area of the mid-west. After living in
\nvarious parts of the U.S. and traveling abroad, I recently moved into
\nthe very same home where I grew up. I enjoy country living: ours is a
\nsmall community, and everyone knows everybody. The culture of the
\ncity also draws me: the shopping, dining, and the opera and ballet. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n     I
\nlove traveling, especially to other countries, and I speak Spanish.
\nOf course I love to read, and I’m a published poet. I like
\nbaking <\/span><\/span>pies<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/b><\/span><\/span>and
\ndrinking ale. Oh, and I like playing cornhole, and I spend way more
\ntime than I should playing computer games.
\n   
\n My constant companion is a tiny Yorkshire terrier named Georgie
\nDoodlebug. I call her GiGi. She’s my fur baby.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
