\nIn
\n 1917 when U.S. President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany, the
\nentire nation went to war. Families didn’t just send their sons and
\ndaughters overseas, they too were expected to make sacrifices. None
\nother than Herbert Hoover (future president) was in charge of making
\ncertain the soldiers and sailors had enough food by making families
\nconserve. His plan was simple\u2014give up one thing per day of the week to
\nhelp the war effort and bore his name, Hooverizing.<\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
\n<\/a>There were Wheatless Mondays (corn meal was substituted)<\/div>\n
\nMeatless Tuesdays (beans and fish were substituted)<\/div>\n
\nPorkless Saturdays (beans and fish were substituted)<\/div>\n
\nHeatless days to conserve coal (needed to power the steamships carrying troops and supplies overseas)<\/div>\n
\nLegal holidays every Monday during the winter to conserve coal<\/div>\n
\nIndustrial shutdowns to conserve coal.<\/div>\n
\nAnd the introduction of Daylight Savings Time to allow work to be done during normal daylight hours.<\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
\nWoman
\n in large cities were sent to pick over rotted produce to save what
\ncould be saved and canned for troop use. These volunteers rescued
\nmillions of tons of produce and received extra rations for their
\nfamilies for their work. <\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
\nLand
\n Armies were created in every available lot to grow produce and we saw
\nthe rise to the Victory Gardens usually associated with World War 2.
\nFamilies sent jars of grease collected from their kitchens for the war
\neffort. Every association banded together to create comfort bags and
\ndonate goods to relief efforts. <\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
\nThe
\n efforts were enough to turn the tide of a war that had been stalemated
\nfor years and bring an end to the suffering of peoples on both sides of
\nthe conflict. So as we enjoy our holiday this year, take a moment to be
\nthankful for those whose sacrifices have been mostly forgotten and
\nremember that when humanity stands united, anything is possible.<\/div>\n
