Dream On – Writing Events #OpenBook Blog Hop

Are there any writing events you’d love to be part of?

I thought I’d have all the time in the world to participate in online writing events after I retired

Sadly, it didn’t work out that way. I had to find a new schedule for my life, and many of the events I eyed were suddenly out of my price range.

That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped looking and dreaming. I’ve always wanted to take part in a writer’s retreat. Choose one of the many locations available. Time to work on whatever project I choose while having time to meet and talk with other writers, never having to worry about meals or all the daily responsibilities I’d be leaving behind. I don’t see that becoming a reality for me.

But perhaps I could carve out time for an online version. Even two days without distraction seem like a luxury.

Speaking of writing events, I should mention selling events.

I’ve never had much luck with organized events to sell books. I’ve tried the whole gambit, from one time affairs to ones that have existed for years. If I’m lucky, I “make table,” but I’ve never walked away with enough to cover hotel and other expenses.

Local summer festivals are a different story. I’ll never get rich from them, but I sell enough books to encourage me to keep writing. I’d do more of them, and I no longer like to drive unfamiliar roads after dark. But I can’t repeat the same events when I don’t have new books for them. What I need to do is locate more profitable events in my area and rotate between them. (I applied for two such events this year but was turned down. Sigh.)

For those who follow me – you know what comes next. Check out the other authors on this hop and find what events they’d like to be part of by following the links below. And until the next time we meet, please stay safe!

  1. Like you I’ve never had any luck selling books at organised events. I’ve given them up unless they’re free.

  2. I did a summer festival where all the authors were put next to the second-hand charity bookstall. As the organiser said when we complained, “It’s all books.”
